Our bedrooms need to work harder than ever before. They’re becoming places where we don’t only sleep, they’re dressing rooms, home office spaces and even dining areas!
How do you light a multifunctional bedroom?
Sometimes the hardest challenge we face is leaving our warm, cosy and comfortable beds when our alarm dictates (often quite loudly) that it’s time to get up.
Beds are without doubt, the most comfortable place you can be. In a recent study conducted by Casper, the global sleep company, it was revealed that the average Brit will spend over 7 hours a month, daydreaming about bedtime!
One third of us feel most safe in bed so it’s no surprise that the bedroom is now becoming a destination of choice for more than just sleeping. Keep your thoughts clean please!
You may well be someone who hates crumbs in the bed, but a massive 65% of us frequently eat more than one meal each day in bed. The most popular is no longer breakfast in bed, now dinner in bed is more fashionable.
For the fortunate who are able to work from home, home offices seem to be being replaced by a bed office and rather than being a bad idea, early indications show that creative workers benefit from this practice and creativity is increased! Writing, blogging and drawing were amongst those activities where ideas flowed easier from bed.
Despite the fact we love our beds, our décor can sometimes lack a bit of attention.
Be honest, do you still have a bulb without a shade hanging from a plastic wire lurking somewhere in your home? Following a recent customer survey, a whopping 93% of customers admitting to having one and the vast majority were in bedrooms.
With the bedroom being such a dreamy haven, we really should ensure that the décor and furnishings match the time we want to spend in there. Yes, it really is time that we take down that tatty old shade that the previous owner left behind and give our bedrooms the care and attention they deserve.
A simple refresh will work wonders and give you the opportunity for a good clear out too.
Pick subtle, muted tones that are calming and treat yourself to new bedding. If you’re a cushion lover, go mad and add some of them too! Update the curtains and perhaps have a rearrange of the furniture if something has not been quite right up until now. Think about how you use each section of the room and if you’re not quite Generation Bed yet, think about how you could use the space better!
Once you’ve thought about this, you will be ready to decide on your bedroom lighting and what it needs to offer you to achieve these goals.
For relaxing and watching TV, you will need subtle ambient lighting. A ceiling light with a dimmer switch would be ideal, or table lamps or wall lights with warm bulbs will also do the trick. But what about if you want to read, or work from your bed? Consider flexible lighting that you can adjust to target the task in hand.
Style is also hugely important as the more the room reflects your personality, the more comfortable you will feel. Pick something that you really love to ensure that your new design will continue to bring a source of joy for years to come.
