The Rise of Pendant Lights

It seems that we bring you an annual blog post on the subject of pendant lights, but it’s not without good reason, they have grown to be an essential part of our homes and heading into 2016, their popularity still hasn’t peaked. Pendant lights play a vital role in your interior lighting as they are more often than not situated in the centre of our rooms and are large enough to provide the majority of the light we require to flood the space; making them an ideal candidate to create a style statement in your home. However, we’ve also seen them used above breakfast bars and kitchen worktops; which help create an equally as impressive lighting feature and help provide light where it’s needed most.

It’s not only in our homes where we’ve seen the popularity of pendant lights grow, but also in restaurants and bars, where business owners are mirroring the latest home lighting trends within their own chic decor. Pendant lights are perfect for bar and restaurant settings, as well as your own kitchen and diners, as the height of the light fitting is often adjustable so can be set to a suitable height above the table or worktop and can also be used in conjunction with a dimmer – perfect for creating cosy and romantic atmospheres when needed!

For 2016, lighting trends look set to stay much the same of the previous year; with industrial, vintage and mid-century lighting taking hold and, in turn, inspiring designs of pendant lights. These trends tend to see pendant lights being made from a mixture of materials, including wood, glass and antique metal and feature strong, bold shapes and vintage, oversized bulbs that have a decorative filament. Let’s take a look at some of our favourite pendant lights that we have in our online store to help you completely transform your room in terms of style, ambience and quality of light.

This industrial style mini pendant is crafted from forged steel for an authentic look. Whilst its size may make it unsuitable for use as a main ceiling light, it will look great positioned over a breakfast bar or kitchen worktop/ island.

Again, not a pendant light we’d use as the main light source in the room, but one that will inject just as much character and style as larger alternatives, is the rustic style pendant in a glossy cream and red finish – giving the ultimate nostalgic American diner appeal.

Without a doubt one of the most popular pendant lights that you’ll find in bars and restaurants, and quickly making their way into our homes, are the vintage light cluster pendants; which feature seven lamp holders suspended by ceiling hooks. The ceiling hooks make the height of the bulbs fully adjustable, so they work just as well above a table as a dining room pendant as they would a main ceiling pendant light on a high ceiling. The cluster provides plenty of light and looks great when used with vintage style bulbs which have decorative filaments.
