Uplighter Floor Lamps from Lighting Company http://www.lightingcompany.co.uk/rss/1/productlistings/uplighter-floor-lamps/cat266
Up-lighting in a room may sound counter intuitive, why or earth would you want to up light when trying to get more light into your space why point it skywards?

In some cases you wouldn’t! let's come back to reasons not to use an uplighter later.

Up-lighting is generally good!

Really good! Light reflected off the ceiling is called indirect light. Indirect meaning the light reflects from, in this case, but not always, the ceiling. The use of indirect lighting is beneficial as takes away glare as light bulbs are hidden. Yet up light still increases the level of light. Reflected light is softer and less harsh.

Uplighters are standard lamps or floor lamps that cast light up high, up light!

Lighting your whole room with just a bright ceiling light does little for the ambience or mood within the space. We’d suggest layering light Also look at the height of the space and pay attention to heights and levels of light too.

Larger rooms will require light are various levels to create interest. Think of lighting your room in thirds high level, mid level and low level. Taller rooms with low hanging centre lights risk a proportion of the room being duller and this is where uplighters really benefit taller rooms.

By the same token, a room with low ceiling heights may not be able to accommodate a ceiling light at all. In these cases uplight is a must.

Indirect light is when light is selected off a surface. Indirectly lighting the space, this light is diffused. Creating a soft light that’s pleasant to be in relaxing but not dull, it brings that uplifted feeling you get in a brighter space.

Uplighting isn’t always a good thing. Three very good reasons not to use uplighting in a room.

If you have an awful looking ceiling with cracks don’t up light it, this will simply highlight the negative points in the room. Fix the ceiling if you want to use an uplighter a nice flat white ceiling is a thing of joy so why not show that off.

You’ll note we said white ceiling white is best, lighter cream and pale grey are ok but dark coloured ceilings don’t reflect light. Yes of course uplighting may showcase contrasting architrave or coving off that is white, which may be a good enough reason to uplight. But, as much of the benefit of uplight is to reflect light we say unless a very good reason such as features or textures wall to high light an uplighter may not be right for darkly painted ceilings.

Uplighting gives a good wash of indirect light but to get the full effect you’ll need at least 30cm of free space above other wise the pool of light will be limited to just above the lamp. Much like when you hold a torch close to a wall you get a spot, but pull that backwards and the spot decodes wider and floods light across the wall. Talking of wall there are wall lights that work the same way also called uplighters or wall washers.

In the main the benefits of uplight by far outweigh the downs. For those who have a average to tall white ceilings, lighting it up!
Copyright 2026 Lighting Company en Sat, 10 Oct 2026 17:31:42 +0100 Sat, 10 Oct 2026 17:31:42 +0100 Sat, 10 Oct 2026 17:31:04 +0100 ALLASIO LED Mother & Child Floor Lamp Antique Brass ALLASIO LED Mother & Child Floor Lamp Antique Brass
