Case Study: Hereford Barn Conversion.
The Property Owners travelled from Hereford to Taunton to take advantage of the consultations.
Our consultant Jane meet with the couple renovating a barn. The barn was listed and whilst the owners had an idea and a clear aesthetic in mind. They wanted to find the best way to achieve the looks they longed for. Their problem was they couldn’t find lights specifically for the high ceiling they had. The large vaulted space of the early 19th-century property was vast and beamed a fabulous feature that required something very special indeed to light it.
Jane’s expert knowledge brought their vision to life. She suggested a bespoke light in an industrial vintage style that fitted perfectly in the former agricultural building. It featured oversized light bulbs hung from the beams on bespoke pendants. The cables were very long allowing the lights to be staggered and the finished effect is spectacular. The owners were thrilled. They felt that it was a great collaboration, where they and Jane worked together for the best results.
They wrote to say:
“Thank you so much, Jane. I’d say it was a great example of teamwork! You really helped translate our vague ideas and bring them to light (pun intended).
It’s amazing that despite still having a lot to do the Barn is beginning to feel like we are putting our own stamp on it!
Jane also understands that aesthetically no two properties are the same. She quickly understood the look that would work for the barn and the owner’s preferences and set about making their wishes a reality.
Friends and family have been wowed by the main feature light and it really does bring that early 1800s industrial/agricultural feel, yet it’s very contemporary 21st Century. A real nod to the Barn’s past for sure”

We asked Jane the Consultant on the day what she brings to the consultation.
My role is to work with the clients and bring expertise that makes sure they select lights that function within the space. Not simply visually although I do love that bit, but that they are the right specification for the room too.
I view this as a two-way collaboration says Jane. Sometimes people want technical guidance and other times it’s understanding an interior design aesthetic. I keep up to date with interior trends and styles and we all love our regular trend forecasts. This means we know what the look will be next year and beyond. This is really useful for people whose project is in the early stages. I can confidently tell them what is hot and what is not. Ultimately the choice is the customers but some people like their home to be on trend and others prefer a timeless look or a heritage look in keeping with the age of the house.
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the finished results and knowing that I helped to achieve that for our lovely customers. I really loved the look of the barn and I know what the overall plan is it’ll be stunning. It’s a beautiful house and the owner selected what I think are the perfect lights to showcase the heritage of the property.
The outside lights of the barn needed to sit well with the building’s facade. And they do look good. Of course, I can offer suggestions but when the clients have a good eye and can style things this beautifully my style suggestions are not needed.
My role then is to ensure the lights comply with safety standards for that location. It’s something some people don’t consider, but I do! Getting these details right saves them time effort and money, for our customers. I do like to make sure we bring value to the project and to our customers.
It’s not all pretty lighting suggestions.
I’ll also lease with manufacturing sometimes as we can do bespoke lighting. When it’s needed really quickly, as it did in this case. I managed to expedite things, I like to make sure the lights are ready for delivery to the site when they are needed.
However, sometimes bespoke work can take up to 6 weeks. This is why we’d recommend exploring lighting early in the project and getting things ordered in advance of when you need them. It also helps your electrician to stay on track saving time and money at the latter stages of a project. From experience, we know this matters to customers.

When is the right time to book a consultation?
It’s worth doing this early on in your home construction project. You’ll be able to make informed decisions about lighting placement, fixtures, and types that best suit your needs and preferences.
Whether you want to create a cosy look in a listed property. Or showcase a hi-tech architectural modern vibe a lighting consultation can help bring these visions to life. The further ahead you plan the easier a project is to get finished on time and within budget.
