Desk Lamps and Study Lights

What are the best study lights?

Good illumination is key to lighting a workspace. If you’ve had too bright light or a light that’s too dim, you’ll know this only too well. Choosing the correct Desk Lamp is crucial.

We may associate working from home as a modern concept, but as the saying “burning the midnight oil” suggests, we have actually long since utilised our homes to work and study. We believe that for this day in age, the only thing that should be burning whilst you study, is your ambition!

Getting Desk Spaces Ready

Lighting your work space makes studying easier. Allowing your focus to be solely on producing your finest work, you won’t be distracted by glare on your computer screen.

Consider using a mouse, as (so I have been informed!) it can make you up to 25% more efficient than using a tracking pad.

Ensure that you have the best internet connection that you can. Nothing is more annoying than buffering or the risk of losing your work if it cuts out.

Make space for your desk. You’re going to spend a lot of time here, so take the time and space needed to make you feel comfortable.

Invest in a comfortable, height-adjustable chair. Essay writing is not fun when you have to keep moving to stay comfortable!

Source somewhere to safely file away your work at the end of your day. You’ll need to rest and enjoy your time in your room to maintain a healthy emotional well-being.

Lighting a Desk

In addition to positioning your new desk lamp, set up your desk area and get yourself feeling comfortable.

  • If you have natural light coming in to the room, it’s best to position your monitor in front of this, so that the light comes in either side of your screen.
  • Use desk lamps, floor lamps or wall lights as your task lighting, positioned at the sides of your monitor.
  • Adjustable task lighting is best, as it allows you to manoeuvre the light exactly where you need it.
  • Consider dimmable lights as this offers you greater flexibility around the light levels that you need.
  • Ensure that you have enough ambient light in the room too; ceiling lights and other lamps positioned further back in the room will help to prevent eye strain when the natural light fades.
  • Adjust the monitor so that any reflective materials don’t bounce the light back at the screen.
  • Use the 20/20/20 rule to help maintain your 20/20 vision! Look away from your screen every 20 minutes, at a spot 20 feet away for around 20 seconds.

Getting comfy… The below illustration shows how you should aim to sit at your desk for long periods of time. Obviously, you can tweak it slightly so that you’re comfortable, but you will thank yourself when you’re older and busy working in your new profession! Maintaining an effective posture now will ensure that you minimise any aches and pains down the line.

So, now you have your workspace set up and adequately lit, now you can learn how to eat on a budget!
