Globes have been used in lighting for over a hundred years, being an iconic design during the Victorian era. Before electricity was available to the majority, gas lamps were the favoured option utilised in the majority of homes. Using gas lamps was vexatious, largely thanks to the fragile nature of the ‘mantle’ which was a mesh bag, impregnated with a metal salt which kept the flame burning from the gas supply. To protect eyes from glare and to increase the decorative appeal, they were often covered with a glass shade, a very popular choice of which was the glass globe.
