Lighting Trend 2016: Vibrant Carnival

Rio de Janeiro in the spotlight with a colour explosion of an epic scale!

This trend is as diverse as the country that inspires it, Brazil. Think carnival, samba, passion and energy! The very essence of living life to the full juxtapose with the tropical rain forests displaying vegetation in lush rich greens, blue skies, tree canopies, exotic birds and rare jewel like flowers.

This interior design trend is epic and exuberant as you would expect no less from the thriving culture it emerges from.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that “carnival” and “rain forest” have few shared inspirations, think again! There are a lot of similarly rich, vibrant, retina popping carnival colours and a host of exotic surfaces as well as feathers, fronds, flowers and tempting forbidden fruits. Vibrant Carnival is a mash up of astonishing jewel colours. As you may be well aware Brazil is hosting the Olympiad XXXI games (or Rio 2016 as it’s more often referred to), this global event see’s Rio thrust into the spotlight and oh boy how we look forward to that opening ceremony, I bet my house it’ll be spectacular! With a riot of colours and feathers we’ll all be sambaing in our living rooms around the world!

Let us take a minute to think how the UK’s Olympic legacy and its 2012 hosting impacted on home interiors. My how we became patriotic with the red, white and blue of the Union flag and who could avoid the “keep calm and carry on” posters and trinkets that bedecked our homes? World events do have a remarkable impact on our lives. As I’m pretty sure I haven’t lost my house in my last bet I’ll wager again that we’ll see the same uptake of Brazilian cultural influences on fashion and interior style in 2016. If you’re keen to implement this hot, hot, hot trend then continue on!

Use more than a dash of confidence, be sure to bring in those hot pinks, fiery bright oranges, lush greens, feathers and frills teamed with powerful big blooms and exotic birds and butterfly’s. Clash and challenge your senses in blazes of colour and celebrate life! There are a multitude of ways to bring these in, from your choice of paints, cushions, floral accessories and of course your lighting! There’s plenty of vibrant carnival coloured lamps, shades, ceiling lights and wall lights to choose from. Reading the travel brochure “explore the world” by Hayes and Jarvis I read “everyone should visit Brazil at least once in their lifetime. The people are infectious, the scenery lush and tropical”. They go on to reveal landmarks like Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana beach which are high on every travelers bucket list, and yes that Jesus statue is on mine! For this year whilst Brazil can’t be stamped on my passport I can join you in a whistle stop journey around a few of our products which give a flavour of Brazil.

If you’re creating the vibrant carnival look in a large space then choose lavish mossy or emerald greens and mix in a pop of contrasting bright colour. Don’t forget to use texture, woven almost tribal like patterns can work too, clash and contrast your boldest finds. To keep the look fresh rather than busy keep woodwork and ceilings pure white, it makes colours look even bolder. For a smaller room use a paler backdrop and use cushions and lamps to inject the contrasting colour. This will help to bring a fresh dynamic.

Be brave and be confident, bold contrast and vibrant mixes of colour are what the tropics and their carnivals are all about! It’s full of soul and lively. Have you ever looked at groups of mass dancers in these parades? Individually and in small groups they look chaotic, all doing their own thing and looking completely different… Then it pans out to the bigger picture and it just works! It’s chaotic tapestry! The madness comes together beautifully.
