💡👀 Latest Looks – Iridescent Lighting

If you’re looking for feature lights then look no further than our “Latest Looks”, a series where we focus on firm favourites and emerging trends in lighting. This edition puts “iridescent” in the spotlight, lights that use materials that create a sheen and the appearance of different colours from different angles. Often using geometric shapes and translucency to create a sci-fi aesthetic this design would be great for a contemporary home.

There’s something very captivating and wondrous about a surface that appears to change colour as you change your view or angle of it, it also gives a sense that the material is precious. It is of course caused by the surface interfering with none other than, light! So what could possibly be better to utilise iridescent material than light fittings? There are a range of ceiling lights and table lamps available.

I’m sure many of you will already know that when light is refracted through glass or crystal it is split into its component colours for a mesmerising effect. The image above shows the typical experiment image for this which through a love of science or music you may already be familiar with. Although this requires specific angles and concentrated light the same sort of effect can be achieved through iridescent and coloured glass.

This way the, alluring effect can still be seen whether the light is on or off, so during the day time you still get the same colour versatile effect. Iridescent materials are a brilliant way to add a subtle and elegant colour to your interior, if a saturated and vibrantly coloured red pendant isn’t your thing then you should definitely consider this latest look.

Take a look at the Rogan ceiling pendant above, using a beautifully blown iridescent glass it gives a stunning oil on water effect that’s visible whether the light is on or off. A blend of blue, purple and green hues this elegant pendant would look perfect above a dining room table or kitchen island.

Iridescent materials are also a great option for those who like to change decor and don’t want to decide on one finish for their light fitting, why not opt for one that appears to gradually change colour as you look at it from different angles? It will work with all colours that you choose for future room refreshes. Great for the indecisive homeowner!

If you have the space for something a little larger and would like additional impact then consider the Venus ranges ceiling pendant cluster (pictured above). Available in various sizes these would be great as a statement piece above a dining room table or in a long drop stairwell glistening in subtle colours.

As mentioned before the Iridescent look plays well with geometric shapes, I’m sure you’ll agree. Pictured above is our Asteroid table lamp from Designer brand Innermost. With beautiful faceted blown glass in a dichroic finish with no two edge lengths the same this really is a structural and colour filled masterpiece, great for a contemporary setting.

For those of you with a less contemporary style home don’t fear, there are some more understated light fittings which feature the beauty of iridescence. If your home leans on the side of traditional then the Prism ceiling pendant (pictured below) displays a standard and timeless design clear glass shade with a smaller inner glass in an iridescent colouring. A great way to ease the look into your home ensuring nothing looks out of place. Don’t feel you can’t add colour and interest to a period setting.

In contrast if your interior is of a modern contemporary design then why not opt for something with a visually distinctive structure, combining two eye catching features for a unique and decorative impact. Below shows the Bibang ceiling pendant which has a clear drum shaped shade with a series of interlocking colourful methacrylate panels. An attractive piece from Italian designers that’s sure to add interest over a table or kitchen island in the modern home.

We hope you’ve been inspired by the beauty of iridescence and are keen to implement it one way or another in your home. To view more colourful light fittings click here to see more: Colour and Iridescent Light Fittings.
