Lighting up Modern Exteriors; Contemporary Outdoor and Garden Lights

What are the best contemporary lights to light up the exterior of modern homes?

We’ve all grown up with historical coach lanterns gracing the entrance-ways to homes. Architecture has moved on; our lights have moved on with them!

Yes, arguably, a graceful coach lantern can offer a nostalgic contrast to a modern new build home. However, if you’re after a contemporary style to light up your new home, then it just won’t make the cut.

Contemporary architecture of today, as in previous eras, challenges the traditional and explores new possibilities. It’s all about innovation.

As we look back at designs of past eras, there’s a shadow of historical journey’s in the designs. Lighting up modern homes needs to reflect the building’s unique style. One of the designs we enjoy is an exterior wall light that incorporates integrated LEDs.

Large windows and lots of glass seems to be a mainstay of modern design, showing that we understand the importance of light in and around our homes. Angular outdoor wall lights with sleek looks complement this style.

Sustainability plays a huge part today and going forwards. This, together with the clean lines, flowing spaces and streamlined designs makes LED lit outdoor lights a sure fire win for today’s homes. Some even feature diffusers which allow you to alter the light effect; change to suit your building’s aesthetics or mood!

Modern homes often have concrete, glass, metals and sustainable wood. The flat roof that was popular around Mid-Century design is back. With a hint of Scandinavian influence, the flat roof can overhang the building footprint, allowing shade in the outdoor space. Lighting this space will help flow this space back to the inside. Regularly spaced flush exterior ceiling lights, outdoor wall lights sited high are perfect for this space. If you have enough clearance, outdoor ceiling pendants really set the scene of indoor/outdoor living.

Well-lit landscaped gardens are what we need; low maintenance and well structured, mirroring the home’s interiors. Pathway lights are perfect for this, along with ground spike lights.

Convenience in exterior lighting is therefore prized too; what about PIR (passive infrared) sensors for lighting the front door? These clever lights come on just when you need them, so no wasting electricity! You’ll also never forget to turn them on, as you can leave them on all the time, ready for action. They can also be great to alerting you to visitors too.

And how about lighting the driveway to your home? Modern new homes sometimes lack in the outdoor front space, so if you have a sizable plot, this is definitely something to light up! You don’t want to make it look like a runway, so go subtle, but bollard lights lining the driveway look beautiful and are useful too.

What outdoor lighting will you choose?
