Often, DIY around the home relies on expert help. For many of us, what we want to achieve and our ability to achieve it are poles apart. However, installing a solar light only requires very basic skills. If you can screw something to a wall you are a DIYer that can install a solar light!

Solar Lighting – Easy Peasy.

With solar lighting even a novice can install it without any electrical knowledge, at all!

It’s as simple as screwing the fitting to the wall and you’re done. How impressed would you be with yourself if you could fit an outside light in a matter of minutes? How many brownie points does that earn you? A gazillion!

Solar lighting is so simple to fit. Just a couple of screws, maybe a spirit level and hey presto: let there be light.

Solar Lighting powered by the sun. It means that it costs you nothing to power it. Zilch, free energy and a few minutes to fit and you are set. There’s no excuse not to do this as a quick weekend job, this weekend!

Solar lighting does need to be fitted where it gets some sunlight of course, but a normal UK amount of sunshine is enough to store power and produce light to be used in the evenings,

If you intend to mount a wall light next to the front door you’d be wise to cut back any climbing pants from around the door and keep the solar panel free from falling leaves, just brush them off, allowing sunshine to be harvested and stored.

Many energy-saving lights have PIRs (Passive Infra Red) in other words a sensor. These detect people and switch on automatically upon approach. This is really useful stuff, you never need to remember to turn it on, it will do it automatically as they have photocells which prevent them from coming on in daylight but automatically to light when it gets dark. Light will be there when you need it.

What’s more, there are various styles of solar lighting from wall mounted to table lamps, yes, really – outdoor table lamps.

For the front or back door the additional light is practice and stylish but don’t limit yourself. Solar lights can be mounted along walls anywhere be that brick, render even wooden panels. The walls around a patio, pergolas or fence panels.

LED Pedestal and Post lights

Aside from wall versions, there are garden post styles allowing you to position down a driveway or around the garden path. Even to dress up a gravel bed and make a feature of an otherwise dull space.

LED Outdoor Table Top Lamps

One of the coolest versions of solar lighting is the tabletop lantern. They can be used on the patio table or stand on either side of your patio door, at the side of the steps. They are transportable so you could even take them for a stroll down the garden when you’re looking for the dog or when you remembered you didn’t bring the washing in. For those with a more glamorous lifestyle when you have a beachside BBQ with your hip friends. The fact I said hip friends tell you why I don’t have that lifestyle! I use my take-any-where lamp on the balcony with a glass or two.

Why don’t I have the wall-mounted version, you may ask? My level of DIY has not yet reached the level where I can put in a couple of screws.

I’m too lazy to even screw in a wall-mounted one! No way! I can manage that but I have wired-in electric wall lights already, but prefer to have my solar one on…… electric has gone up in price. Solar costs nothing to use, I prefer to use the power of the sun. Means I can stretch to another bottle of wine!
