Floor lamps that are anything but standard
Considering buying a standard lamp but not sure if they are trendy anymore. Well, definitely on the ‘no’ list are the ones your old aunty had. Mine did for sure, she had a wonky shaded rickety old thing that stood in the corner looking abandoned for as long as I’d been alive at the time. Enough to put anyone off standard lamps.
Raising the bar!
Standards are so much higher now and yes; they are very much on trend. Elevated designs have seen a resurgence in standing lamps of all types, even shaded versions are on the rise.
Called to Task!
Often used as a task lamp or working lamp, floor lamps don’t take up tabletop space. They are excellent companions for avid readers as they stand dutifully aside from your favourite reading chair.
Striking the right balance!
Floor lamps are especially useful to balance the light levels in a room. Rooms with just top light from a ceiling fitting or too much lower-level light from table lamps can look unbalanced. A standard lamp can help your eyes transition between high and low-level lighting. You don’t need lots of mid-level lighting normally a single standard lamp in a room will balance things perfectly.
Up the Ante!
If you have a low ceiling or no ceiling light you may need to up the ante and add another form of light. A floor standing uplighter will do a great job of lifting the light level in your room. If your ceiling is in fairly good condition and white consider using up lighters they’ll bounce the light off the ceiling beautifully.
Choose Light!
There are so many versions available to choose from. Heightened interest in mid-century spotlighted that standard lamps and floor lamps are super useful as reading lamps. Of all the standard lamps mid century-styled lamps have always remained popular.

Uplighter lamps we’ve already mentioned but on particular uplighter that’s become a classic in it’s own right is the Tiffany uplighter, charming and useful what’s not to love.

We can’t talk ever popular floor lamps without talking swing arms lamps. Practical and beautiful the swing arm lamps have a modern heritage style making them look equally good in a cosy cottage or a posh London penthouse they have an upmarket stature that never dates.
Talking of upmarket elegance Laura Ashley lighting is back. Renowned for classical modern elegance they have always produced standard lamps with exemplary standards. Here’s by far the most popular styles from Laura Ashley.
Staggeringly beautiful the antler lamp is all about the base. Artisan made in the uk this lamp is truly a conversation piece you’ll be proud you own. We have this on display within our taunton store and everyone loves it. It has to be touched, the charm is magnetic, this stops people in their tracks and they have to ask about it. It’s cast from antlers in resin, each lamp is unique as each is hand painted. There are 2 versions a dark colour close to original and my favourite a bleached paler version which I personally love with a pop of colour rather than a plain shade.
Far from standard
With standard lamps they either have to be simple and useful or delightfully different statements here’s a few to whet your appetite.
And Finnley…
If you don’t have floor space, no problem the Finnley wall light works in exactly the same way. You thought i meant finally didn’t you. Almost, but I can’t go without a shout out for my very own design. Whilst doing the same job as floor lamp, it fixes to the wall and doesn’t need to stand on the floor at all. Further more you can just plug this in like a standard lamp, no need for an electrician to wire it in.
You can style this anyway you like by pairing it with a lampshade. Any of the ceiling lamp shades should fit and there’s a style to suit your interior. For a super contemporary industrial look why not use a fancy light bulb and let it shine?

Go on raise your home lighting to above that of the standard with higher standard standards.
