Sensor Lights with PIR are very practical light to bring light to an area when triggered. Whilst they are sometimes called motion detector lights this is not actually correct, PIR stands for passive infra red. This detects the change in atmospherics or heat and this in turns triggers the light.

PIR sensor lights are used to limit the amount of power used only switching the lights on only when required. They are practical and efficient but that doesn't mean they can't be decorative too.
