amazon alexa and google home light bulbs

Smart lighting is often seen as a complex task, even for those tech savvy amongst us. In this blog, we’ll take you through this step by step guide to help you get connected with our new range of smart products and make your home a smarter place to live.

So, how do you connect lights to Alexa or Google Home?

Brief Summary

  1. Install light bulb in fitting
  2. Install V-TAC Smart Light App on phone or tablet
  3. Add device (light bulb) on App
  4. Install Amazon Alexa or Google Home App on phone or tablet
  5. (Alexa) Enable the V-TAC Smart Light skill
  6. Add device (light bulb) on Amazon Alexa or Google Home App
  7. Control your light manually or via voice commands!

Okay, so first thing’s first (and it goes without saying; but we’ll say it anyway!) get the correct smart bulb for your fitting. In this blog we’re guiding you through the setup process for these new smart bulbs in particular, so click the “shop smart lighting” button above or the image below to get the compatible bulbs.

Now we have our lamps to hand let’s get connecting!

Initial Setup

First, download the “V-TAC Smart Light” app on your smart phone or tablet, from the Google Play Store if you’re on Android or the App Store if you’re on iOS.

Upon opening the app, you’ll be asked to login or register for an account. Registering is a simple enough process, simply enter the details asked for and you’ll be sent a verification code to enter on the screen that follows. Keep note of your login details – you’ll need them later on!

Next, you’ll want to select “Add Device” and then select “Lighting (Wi-Fi)” under the “Lighting” tab.

You will see a screen with the animation, shown left.

Power your smart bulb off and on 3 times until it begins blinking rapidly. (approximately 2 blinks a second). This means the light bulb is now in pairing mode, press the button to confirm and proceed to the next step.

Select your Wi-Fi network and enter your Wi-Fi password. The app will begin searching, registering and initialising the smart bulb. It may take a few moments to complete.

Once it is added you’ll be given the option to rename it – for your convenience! We called ours Hue…Hue Watt… Get it?

After a successful pairing you’ll already be able to control multiple features through your mobile or tablet! You can start switching it on and off, change the colour, control the brightness, set timers, schedules and more.

We’re looking to pair the lighting with Amazon Alexa or Google Home however, so there are a few more steps to take.

Connecting a Smart Bulb to Alexa

If you haven’t already, download the Amazon Alexa app on your device and proceed to login or register.

Tap the lower right icon in the Alexa app called “Devices” followed by the small 3 lines in the top left corner to open the settings panel.

Then select “Skills & Games”.

Search for “V-TAC Smart Light” and enable the skill. You’ll be asked to enter your V-TAC Smart Light login details here. Enter these and hit “Link Now”.

Simply hit the “Authorise” button that is presented next and you will receive a confirmation that it was linked successfully.

Final step (yay!) – You can complete this one of two ways:

  • Head back to the settings tab under “Devices” and select “Add Device”, then press “Discover Device” on the smart bulb you’re adding.
  • Ask Alexa to discover the device with the command “Alexa, discover devices”

Voila! We’re done. You have successfully installed a smart bulb for use with Amazon Alexa. So go ahead, test it out with some of these! *note you’ll need to refer to the lamp as you named it*

Connecting a Smart Bulb to Google Home

If you haven’t already, download the Google Home app on your device and proceed to login or register.

Create a new home or choose from an existing home. If you’re new to the app, you’ll choose a new home.

Turn on your Google Home device and connect it to the app following the on-screen setup.

Once you’re on the main Google home page, hit “Add” shown by the plus sign “+” to add a new device and skill. Then tap the “Set up device” button.

You’ll then enter a new setup screen – if you’ve followed the “Initial Setup” section above you now need only select the “Have something already set up?” option under the “Works with Google” heading.

Type “V-TAC Smart Light” in the search and select the “V-TAC Smart Light” icon.

Sign in with your V-TAC Smart Light log in details and hit “Link Now”.

Next press the “Authorise” button presented. After a few seconds you will be asked which device to add to your home. Select your smart bulb and hit “Next”.

Select the home you wish to add your smart bulb to.

There you have it! You’ve successfully added a smart bulb to Google Home. You can start switching it off and on from the homepage or can tap the smart bulb for more functions.

Why not test it out with voice commands on your Google Home device?*note you’ll need to refer to the lamp as you named it*

We hope this blog has been helpful in getting you setup for smart lighting. Lighting your home with smart lighting opens up so many possibilities and quite literally gives you the freedom of speech!

We also have a range of smart plugs (setup in a very similar way) to give timers, schedules and mobile operation to integral lamp fittings.
